10 Guidelines on How to Buy a Horse

Monday Mar 8, 2010

Purchasing a pony involves a long term commitment that you must understand totally. Before you get a pony, confirm you did your research about owning and taking care of a horse. Make sure that you have prepared enough room for your pony to move around. You must also be extremely sure of what kind of pony you would like to purchase.

Before you buy a horse, here are some suggestions that will help you.

1. Don’t be influenced, tempted or pressured by anybody in buying a horse.

Do not jump into buying a pony because there’s no reason to. Take your time looking for the right one. It will certainly help you to decide whether or not to buy the horse.

2. To keep it open don’t debate your financial position in front of the seller so he/she will not know of it.

3. If you are buying a pony for your child, it is important that you talk to your child first. Debate about the importance of not showing excitement or interest in the pony to the vendor.

4. Tell your seller you value your instructor’s opinion so the level of pressure exerted on you is reduced.

You could have to prepare money for your instructor’s time and expertise.

6. Consider the current conditions, the time the pony has been for sale and the vendor’s private fiscal circumstances when estimating sales price. Maybe you can also include how much the vendor loves you and thinks you will offer a good home for their pony.

7. Ask for concessions if your seller does not negotiate. You can request a free tack or free pony delivery for concession. These are examples of industry standard practices which may not insult the seller.

8. Sometimes , buyers have to prepare money for sales commissions. Sales commissions, which run from 10% to twenty p.c., are very typical in transactions such as this.

9. Before you buy the pony, have it checked by an independent 3rd party veterinarian so you can know how healthy the pony is. If possible, attend the vet check yourself and know the findings. Then decide whether or not to buy the horse.

10. Finally, have a written contract of the purchase.
