Games With A Horse While Riding?

Wednesday Nov 25, 2009

In the winter it gets boring! What are some fun games in indoor arenas while i am RIDING. There is barrels is one arena however that one is always booked what are some fun things to do?

get some old buckets or poles or whatever and start of by doing bending – it’s great for suppling the horse and getting your balance spot on – the most fun is if you can race someone else going bending up their line at the same time. Then get a potato (hardier than an egg) and spoon and practise being able to trot of canter round without dropping it. flag races are also lots of fun – if you don’t have flags use a few whips – pick them up from one end and drop them in a bucket down the other end. practise your "waltz" (up for 2 beats, downb for one) or your "tango" (up for 3 beats, down for 3 beats) in the trot. bareback is always fun and is nice and warm!!!! all these games are really the best with someone else to race with or at least share the laughs with. Also with a 2nd person you can practise the rope race- where each of you has the end of the same piece of rope and you practise storming round the ring as fast as possible without dropping it or using your bending poles with it. for any more suggestions look up the old pony club mounted games stuff or indeed any pony games books – there are hundreds!! have fun!!!!

how about doing some jumps
or try riding with no stirrups or even bare back (this helps your position and balance)
Get a group of riders if you can for company and play games with the jumps. or make an assort course using cones and poles etc.
Hope i helped, enjoy your riding

If you have other people to ride with, there’s a ton of games you can do – freeze tag, races (like every team member has to ride down and grab a stick out of a bucket, ride back and tag the next person, etc), whatever.

If alone, back at college where we had no indoor arena and the ground would sometimes get too hard for jumping, we’d set up a "dressage ring" by laying ground poles out in the shape/size and we’d try dressage tests with our hunters. I can’t say we were any good, but it was something different. You could also try to set up a trail course (tarps, stuff like that). Of course, bareback can be fun, and I’d sometimes set up jump courses of just ground poles and just canter over a course of ground poles if I didn’t want to jump my horse that day. Can still work on strides and lead changes that way.
