fun games on horseback?
Posted by admin | Under horseback riding games Tuesday Mar 9, 2010i need some fun games to do on horseback with my friend. it CAN involve the following: ground poles, small jumps, riding bareback, indoor arena, a LITTLE short time outside. CANNOT involve for various reasons: pole bending, soccer, toilet paper, water, eggs, messy items, or LONG time outdoors. please help my friend and i get very bored. oh it can also involve mounting up quickly, so kinda like vaulting. and we are filming some of these things to put on youtube, so make sure they will look cool
i also dont have barrels, or poles for pole bending.
Arena Race: all ages

Tomahawk Race: all age groups
A barrel, open end up is centered in the lane 30 feet from star/finish line with a second barrel, open end down is on the turn line. A "tomahawk" (rubber hose or flat rubber cut in the shape of a tomahawk) is placed on top of barrel on the turn line, extending six inches from edge of barrel. Contestant races to second barrel, picks up tomahawk and races to first barrel, depositing tomahawk into barrel.
Two Barrel Flag: 8-11, 12-15, Women, Men, Sr. Women, Sr. Men
A barrel, open end up is centered in the lane 30 feet from star/finish line with a second barrel, open end up is on the turn line. A stake with a colored flag is placed in each barrel (different color in each barrel) Contestant runs to first barrel (in lane) and picks up that flag then runs to the second barrel, deposits the first flag and picks up the second flag as he/she turns the barrel. Rider must then deposit the second flag into the barrel (in lane) as he/she passes it on the way to the finish line. Rider must keep barrels to either right or left at all times.

I use plastic eggs and put treats in them (to help weigh them down)once horse and rider reaches destination then horse gets a small treat and rider gets a hershey kiss. Can do this at walk, trot and lope and then bareback and with the saddle.
You can get or make flags out of pipe stem cleaners and felt (art department and easily made) and put them in buckets for a relay. You may have to move only certain colored flags and ride a pattern with drop off buckets and pick up buckets (Buckets are stationary on may be on barrels or along the arena fence). Again at walk, trot or lope and then bareback or saddles.
There are lots of events on line.

You can play rescue race, although there is a high chance unless your horse is completely bombproof that it may buck while doing. Your friend is at the end of the arena without a horse. You ride down, your friend gets on double with you and your ride down. FUN!
You can make up a obstacle course and see who does it faster.
You can do musical stalls. Make up stalls with poles, you and your friend play. Although this usually requires more than two people.

time each other to c who is faster @ the canter. you can do trot too, but i like the canter more for that.
you can make up crazy courses out of crossrails and any other jumps you can use, but crossrails are better for it. use things like rollbacks, sharp turns and stuff. best done at the trot unless you really want to try them at the canter.
hope i helped!!

have you thought about the two of you putting together a drill team? usually its 4 ppl but i’m sure you could manage something along those lines….
get the markers that you can use on your horses and have an art contest on their rumps…. or come up with a brand or logo to put there (the markers are washable….)

I think you guys will have so much fun!!!
Make a really hard obstacle course with small jumps, through poles, dismounting and mounting quickly. You could do it on your horse and after swap and do it on your friends’ horse. You could do it all bareback and time each other. It could be really fun! You can also race bareback. Use the standards as barrels to do some barrel racing.
Have fun!!!!
